I got a speeding ticket a week or so ago and received my point notice today. I have four points on my driving record. Great.

My first thought (okay, maybe the 2nd, or 3rd or… definitely in the top 5) … “how many points come off each year?”

Now… a social experiment.

Ask three people over the age of 17, “how many points come off a pa driver’s license every year?”

Go ahead… ask em’! I’ll wait.

Okay great.

No one had a clue did they? No one I know did.

If you want to get technical, it’s not a year. It’s 12 months from the violation.

Regardless… the answer is ……………………………… 3 points a year!!

What an odd day.

Everything was rather blah, nothing special to talk about. Then I got home… and was instantly depressed. Wow. I don’t understand why… but it was the case nonetheless.

So there I sit, futsing around on my computer when song lyrics start flying through my head. Just a verse at first. But then the rest came almost instantly.

Feverishly I typed into notepad and dashed (yes, I said dashed) into my modest studio and lay down the tune. Whether it’s good or not is immaterial, I wanted to get it down. Otherwise I’d wake up tomorrow pissed at myself.

I ran around trying to get everything connected. Mind you, I’ve been drinking, and apparently it’s not as easy as you’d think to make sure everything is hooked up properly (sorry Bose headphones for dropping you).

Finally, I get into the booth and start at it. Fuck levels, fuck everything, I just need to get this recorded!

One take… I’m spent and go back to listen.

“Interesting… this isn’t too bad,” I think to myself, trying to ignore the pops and cracks that come from NOT setting levels properly. “Perhaps I should fiddle with this some more?”

I listen to my single take over and over, changing phrasing and such as I go along… and BAM! Song done.

Inside 5 hours I have a song written. And not just lyrics… but guitar, bass and drums. Of course, since I can only play the drums, my friend Jason is probably going to laugh at me when I talk to him about the guitar part.

Seriously… how cool can you really be making guitar sounds at someone? (think Carl in Episode 2 of ATHF w/ him, the sirens and Kruck! 69999999999999!!!!! ‘that’s from da live album’… ‘yeah you keep throwin’ words around like… blood… and feed… i mean… feed what?)

The moral of this story kids is, even if you’re in the worst mood ever, there is a way to turn that frown… into music! That’s right kids! Just keep writing down how pissed off you are, keep writing, start recording and someday some record company might pay you to whine on stage!
